Headlines (blog 11)

I don't profess to be a great writer of headlines, but a few headlines that a I found made me think that they could have been written better.

This one infuses a little humor into the headline, but it could be written more concise.

Headline:

Can the flu shot give you the flu? The short answer is no and the long answer is no, too — but you may feel some side-effects

Edit: "Can the flu shot give you the flu?"

I like this headline below. From the reading, I would consider this a headline and a deck that follows.

Headline:

The impact of our new mission

Larry Hancock shares two reasons why our updated mission, vision, and values are important: They provide clear direction that shapes our day-to-day work — and they define where we’re going in the future

For the headline below, I would make a couple small changes.

Headline:

This is Microsoft's most humiliating Surface product placement failure yet

Edit: Microsoft's most humiliating product-placement failure yet

Headline:

6 Little-Known Uses for Antidepressants

This is a good headline because it is straightforward and succinct.

Headline:

Minimum wage hikes sweep to victory: What does that mean for US workers?

In the reading it states not to end a headline with a question (although personally I like that) so I I were to rewrite this, I would make turn it into a statement.

Edit:

What minimum wage hikes mean for US workers

This is my editing mistake for the week, and I mean that literally. It's my mistake because I found it in my own notes.

Send to "Stories" Editor’s

When I was taking notes I wrote myself a reminder, and put an apostrophe on "editors." I couldn't believe I did that! At least I caught the mistake.
