Web design (blog 12)

Spacing on a page allows for the site to readable, and sufficient space between images and text makes it easier for the end user to find and read items. The term white space is empty space on a page. It provides balance and elegance to a page. White space allows the user’s eyes to have a break from the rest of the noise on the page.

The Salt Lake City Public Library System has a clean, simple and user-friendly site that has plenty of white space on the home page. The categories on the page are easily displayed so a user can readily find what they need. It is easy to find the library search at the top of the page, and links to the right side of the page are clearly marked for finding specific materials.

Photos on a site should be of people doing real-life activities. Photos should be chosen that describe the story. If trying to decide between two photos to use, only select one. Directional photos should point toward the story. Photos on a page can vary in size and shape.

A good example of a site with attractive-looking photos is the SelectHealth blog. This blog features nice photos that capture real-life people doing real-life activities. The photos further describe each blog post.  The photos make the page look attractive, and makes content easy to find.

I found an editing mistake while watching the movie Top Gun! Watching a movie when you should be doing homework can pay off :)

Here is a screenshot from the beginning of the movie. In the second sentence they used "insure" instead of "ensure."

  1. Top Gun is one of my favorite movies, I can't believe I never noticed that error! Its one thing to find editing mistakes in news articles that are published frequently but it always shocks me when they spend so much money on movies only to spell words wrong.
