"Wish I Was There!!"

My blog title is incorrect on purpose! Haha.

I have to say it's hard to choose just ONE thing to post about in from the topical guide, because I read through it and realize that I do almost all of these things incorrectly! Oy ve.

I have probably always messed this up on this rule "if i were." I have sent many texts saying "Wish I was there!" These statements are hypothetical, so the the hypothetical situation should always be explained with the subjunctive form of the verb were.

Here are some examples that are grammatically correct:

If she were here, we'd take her for ice cream.

If the stock market were to crash, it would be devastating.

If I were there, I'd go swimming with you.

And lastly,

          Wish I were there!

And finally, here is the editing mistake that came across my inbox this week.  As soon as I saw it I knew this would go on the blog, because there are just too many mistakes not to share!  :)

(This was in an invitation to register for a conference FYI.)

  1. I use "wish I was there" all the time. The book showed me how wrong I was for saying it. Whoever sent that invitation to you needs to take a writing and grammar class.

  2. I say "I wish I was there" all the time. To me, "I wish I were there" just doesn't sound right. I am sure most of us think we speak correctly but are receiving wake up calls each week after reading through our books. That email is awful. It fees like whoever wrote it had diarrhea of the mouth and just kept going and going without thinking of what they were saying.
