Eww Brussels Sprouts

After doing the AP Story Edit assignment, I realized that every body says and spells “Brussels sprout” wrong.  I was one of those people.  I looked up how to spell and format it in the “The Associated Press Stylebook” and a dictionary.  They both have it spelled “Brussels sprout,” but the dictionary says it’s okay to spell it “brussels sprout.”  I have never heard somebody say it correctly, not even the “Food Network.”  I don’t think the grocery stores spell it right either, but I can’t remember.  Most people just say, “brussel sprout,” and spell it the same way.  It should be spelled and said like the city Brussels.  Now I don’t really like Brussels sprouts, but I thought it was interesting that most of the time it is spelled and said incorrectly.

Another thing that I thought was interesting is that you don’t abbreviate military titles if they are not before a name.  So I wouldn’t abbreviate lieutenant colonel because it’s not in front of a name.  I would abbreviate it for Lt. Col. John Smith because it’s before a name.

Editing Mistakes

Taken from Gizmodo.com

Mistake:  They have a “you” that doesn’t need to be there.

Taken from io9.com

Mistake 1:  They didn’t put “The Stand” in quotes.  It’s a book title so it should be put in quotes.

Mistake 2:  They have “you’re” instead of “you’ve.”

  1. Hey, I like the example of military titles! I think that's really interesting. I want to give you a big thanks from a certain Army specialist. Specifically, Spc. Trae Chappell. :)

  2. I couldn't find an answer for the 'Brussels sprout' question on our quiz that we had to take, so this is good to know. I agree with you that nobody pronounces it right. I'm pretty sure grocery stores and everywhere else spells it wrong as well. Guess we will both see on our next trip to the store!
